Kauai has no public transit worth relying on, so a rental car is essentially mandatory for seeing the island's beaches, valleys, and the Na Pali Coast trailheads. Nearly all pickups happen at Lihue Airport, and demand consistently outstrips supply — book as far in advance as possible, especially in summer and around holidays. A regular compact or SUV handles all paved roads; only a handful of spots benefit from 4WD.
