Taipei itself is served by an excellent metro system, but a rental car is useful for day trips to Jiufen, Taroko Gorge, or the scenic northeast coast. Most international rental counters operate at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport rather than in the city center. An International Driving Permit is required alongside your national license, and traffic moves on the right.
